Penile injections involve injecting yourself, with a very fine needle, with a medicine that produces an erection. They work even when tablets are not enough.
How it works
- A first injection is given at the practice to find the right dose.
- You learn to self-inject, which is simple and causes little pain.
- At home, the injection is done a few minutes before intercourse.
Who is it for?
- Tablets do not work or are not suitable
- After prostate surgery
- Diabetes or vascular problems
Good to know
- Erection within 5 to 15 minutes
- Side effects are rare: pain, small bruise
- Regular follow-up to adjust the dose

An erection lasting more than 4 hours is an emergency: go to A&E.
